E-Readers Versus Print? Not Necessarily

by Allison Morris.

Are you a book person, or an e-reader? Here’s some good news: you don’t have to pick.

Reading differs situationally, and we’re lucky to have several mediums through which we can now buy and read books. While e-readers and e-books have exploded in popularity (e-book sales grew 117 percent in 2011 alone), it seems that paper books and traditional libraries will be with us for a long time to come. As of 2012, one in six Americans uses an e-reader, and that number is expected to double in 2013.

Although the way we read might be changing, traditional books are still going strong. Younger demographics and students still frequent libraries, and those who read to children prefer a “real” book more than 80 percent of the time. Sharing books with friends and family also occurs most often with printed tomes; but for ease of access on the go, e-readers win the day. Electronic or printed, it doesn’t matter: Nothing beats a good book.

Happy reading!
